As I walk into the room, the young midfielder grabs a soccer ball he clings to until after the conversation. This serves as a simple symbol for a ambition he has never let slip. “I only wanted the beautiful game; I was focused solely on that,” states the Monaco and Senegal playmaker.

His determination and natural ability convinced clubs like Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. Yet, the most difficult person to convince didn't come from a sporting director or manager, it was from his dad. “He didn’t want me playing soccer simply because he hadn’t seen me play,” explains Camara.

Surmounting Initial Obstacles

In time, on “one beautiful day,” Camara earned his father’s blessing to pursue his career in the sport. Another challenge was his modest frame, which discouraged local club Casa Sports from giving him a contract.

However, the famed academy – the institution that produced stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. Following Camara was named the best player in a local competition, the scouts were “astonished” to discover he was not tied down. They moved fast. “They took me straight to the training centre. They prevented me from going back to Casamance,” Camara said.

A Landmark Year and Continental Arrival

This move put him on a trajectory to Europe. A defining period came in 2023, “an unforgettable year,” starting with him lifting the African Nations Championship. Just weeks later, though tired, he competed in the Under-20s Afcon, leading his nation to victory and earning best player.

A month later, he was unveiled as Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Settling in wasn't a problem,” states the 21-year-old. He has lived by himself in Europe, a choice his relatives encourage to keep him focused.

Influences and On-Field Identity

Off-field noise are not really a concern for Camara, who looks up to the Belgian maestro's “modesty” and superb playing qualities. He is also a huge fan of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His ball striking and precision from dead-ball situations are key strengths. Camara confesses he must to control his aggression, having been shown red early in his tenures at both Metz and Monaco. “It's a trait I carry with me!” he jokes.

Life at Monaco, Mentors and Future Goals

With his current club, he values learning from teammates like Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “When I heard about the interest in Pogba, I thought we are really lucky,” he said.

Right now, attention is firmly on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England in their own country…,” he says, pointing to a historic 3-1 win in Nottingham.

Regarding a transfer to the Premier League, he is committed to Monaco at present. “I am very comfortable here,” he insists. However, he's frequently ribbed by icon El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. He laughs, yet remains determined about winning the senior top prize in the future.

“The pressure is on us – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England in their own country… it gives you belief.”
