Weather experts have indicated a chilly commencement to the new year, with wintry precipitation expected throughout a lot of the UK. Those celebrating are advised to dress warmly as near-freezing temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.

Festive Celebrations Go Ahead Amid Warnings

Edinburgh's renowned Hogmanay events are expected to take place, unlike last year's postponement. This proceeds amid yellow warnings for snow in northern Scotland.

"A cold New Year's Eve evening for those who are celebrating, so warmer clothes will be essential," stated the weather service.

Fireworks Under Open but Cold Skies

In other parts of the UK, the weather is likely to be perfect for fireworks displays, with dry conditions and open skies. Readings are due to be cold, so extra layers a necessity, as per forecasters.

To the north, conditions will be cloudier, but this is not anticipated to affect visibility for watching fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.

Widespread Weather Alerts for New Year's Day

Heading into Friday, weather warnings are in place for Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and most of the south-east of England.

• Delays and cancellations are anticipated on public transport.

The Mercury Forecast to Plummet Even More

Going into the new year, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are set to fall even more as snow and gale-force winds are likely to hit the north of the country.

Approximately 10cm of snow is forecast to have settled in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the top roads and uplands.

Health Alerts Issued

Meanwhile, amber cold health alerts have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to continue until noon on 5 January, with temperatures forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.

The health agency explained this indicated the weather was likely to cause notable consequences across the NHS and care systems. This includes a expected uptick in the fatality numbers among the elderly or unwell or those 65 and older.
