Cameron Norrie secured the most notable win of his professional journey by rebounding from a set down to overcome top-ranked player Carlos Alcaraz 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the early stage of the prestigious indoor tournament.

Even though he had previously beaten Alcaraz on two occasions, this win marks Norrie's first ever victory over a reigning world No 1.

"Enormous. Incredibly significant for me," said Norrie, who is now the latest English competitor in the record books to beat a global number one. "Returning from health issues last year, I was defeated in the initial match of qualies here. I just aimed to embrace my game in the closing months of the year. To secure a win like this, it's the greatest victory of my career, my maiden triumph over the world No 1 and likely the strongest competitor in the sport right now."

Norrie, seeded 31st globally, also ended Alcaraz's supreme run of nine finals in a row and 17 successive elite tournament successes, which represented the finest stretch of performances in the Spanish star's early professional path.

Alcaraz appeared to be advancing smoothly to a win in the beginning as he eased in the first set. Yet, the British contender gradually worked himself into contention by serving with improved accuracy and engaging the Spaniard into prolonged, demanding exchanges. His relentless consistency and dependability steadily took its toll.

During large parts of the battle, Alcaraz delivered strong serves but he had difficulty to find his timing on his baseline shots. The young star looked especially struggling executing his primary weapon, which has been the most effective stroke in the sport for most of this season, producing 29 mistakes off the forehand side and a combined of 54 unforced errors. On the other side, the British player offered Alcaraz so few mistakes, maintaining his consistency, fitness and power the entire contest while serving efficiently and choosing his moments to advance into the court and strike effectively.
