American flight controllers are increasingly looking for additional employment and calling in sick, as they continue to work without pay during the government shutdown, the transportation secretary has stated.

"These professionals are wearing thin," Sean Duffy told a news outlet on Sunday, as certain aircraft were halted on the California shoreline due to staffing shortages.

After the government shut down on 1 October, air traffic controllers, who are deemed essential workers, were instructed to continue performing their jobs without pay.

But some have been absent, leading airports to halt or reduce their plane traffic, which has exacerbated setbacks caused by climate and additional factors.

Over three thousand US flights were postponed on Sunday, and Duffy stated he anticipates the situation to grow worse.

"I am seeing the pressure," he said in an interview on a weekend program, adding that he had spoken to multiple professionals to listen to their concerns directly.

"They're taking second jobs, they're out there looking, 'Can I drive Uber, can I secure another source of earnings to cover expenses?'" he continued.

The secretary added that on the previous day 22 alerts at airfields indicated flights would be held up due to a lack of employees - one of the highest after the shutdown began.

The US government shutdown entered its 26th day on the weekend, rendering it the second most extended shutdown in history.

He has consistently cautioned that aviation regulators would slow down the number of planes in the sky if there is a shortage of security staff.

In his interview, he would not answer straightforwardly when questioned if it was safe to travel by air in the US, and instead issued a personal plea to the professionals.

"I need my staff concentrating on the flight paths, not on the finances at home," the official said.

On Sunday, some planes were stopped at Los Angeles International Airport due to staffing shortages, causing interruption at the fifth-busiest terminal in the nation and one of the busiest in the globe, as well as additional travel stretching north to the metropolis of Oakland.

The Federal Aviation Administration alert went out at 08:45 local time on the weekend. Numerous trips were operating normally before noon.

Flights at Newark Airport, though, were delayed an average of over an hour due to personnel issues, and the authority indicated DFW, the second-busiest airport in the country, could encounter difficulties from low staffing in the afternoon.

The agency warned travelers in California to consult carriers about updated departure times.

The situation comes ahead of Game 3 of the championship, which is due to be played in LA on Monday night, and about one month prior to the Thanksgiving holiday, one of the busiest times to fly in the United States.

Strain on American aviation contributed to ending a federal closure in two thousand nineteen. Back then, the halt had reached its fifth week and disrupted flight services, including aviator instruction.

It led a number of flight controllers to stay home on the same day on 25 January 2019, temporarily stopping movement at LaGuardia Airport in New York.

That same day, Donald Trump, who at the period was in his first term as president, consented to approve a short-term spending bill, effectively ending the federal closure after thirty-five days.
