A Tale of Surprising Kindness: The Time a Student Let Me Sleep on Her Dorm Floor
During the year 2006, My journey took me to Canberra for an admissions interview for medical school. I figured to arrange a place to stay upon arrival, but upon reaching the city, a large conference was taking place and all the youth hostels and cheap hotels had no vacancies.
Coming from the city-state of Singapore, I thought perhaps I could bed down in the terminal – but quickly found that airport, unlike Singapore’s, closes all night. With no idea how to proceed and feeling increasingly desperate, I hopped on a bus into town and began walking towards the casino, reasoning I might spend the evening somewhere that stayed open all night. Admittedly, this plan at my peak for nailing a crucial interview the next day, yet, as a cash-strapped student, a pricey hotel was out of reach.
We could all use more folks who show such kindness.
Apparently, I appeared out of place because a woman saw me wandering around the city and asked if I was OK. I shared my situation and right away she suggested I could crash on the ground in her student dorm at the Australian National University – a perfect solution, considering that was where my interview was the following day. She even offered me some free dinner: one of the stuffed baguettes she had taken home her evening job. I was able to use warm shower facilities and a secure location and safe to spend the night.
In retrospect, I can appreciate the significant risk she took as a young woman allowing a guy who was a complete stranger sleep on her floor. At that time I operated under my male privilege bubble and was oblivious to the potential danger. Now, as a father, I’m amazed she took that chance – but still very grateful.
Ultimately, I did not go to the Australian National University, and I lost touch with that kind stranger again, yet her memory has stayed with me her amazing act of kindness. My sincere desire is that karma has rewarded her generosity many times over. Our society requires more individuals who show such kindness.
